How can communities and workers effectively seek justice when their rights are violated by transnational businesses? And what role can non-judicial mechanisms (NJMs) realistically play in advancing accountability and access to remedy?

In this webinar, the EU VALUES Network is delighted to welcome Dr. Shelley Marshall, Dr. Fiona Haines, and Dr. Kate Macdonald, authors of Global Business and Local Struggle: Reimagining Non-Judicial Remedy for Human Rights (with Connor and Delaney). Drawing on one of the most extensive empirical studies conducted in this field—587 interviews with more than 1,100 individuals across five years of fieldwork in Indonesia and India—the authors examine how NJMs operate in practice across sectors, and how they can be strengthened to better serve affected communities. The webinar will feature Dr. Shelley Marshall (RMIT University) who will present the book’s core findings and arguments. The book sheds new light on the strengths and limitations of NJMs, arguing that while they rarely deliver complete remedies on their own, they can play an important complementary role within a broader regulatory ecosystem. By combining rich empirical evidence, multi-method analysis, and an innovative theoretical framework, the authors offer a compelling blueprint for reforming transnational human rights accountability. These insights make a significant contribution to ongoing debates on business and human rights, supply-chain governance, labour rights, and global justice. We are also pleased to be joined by Dr. Kari Otteburn (KU Leuven), who will serve as discussant, offering critical reflections and questions to deepen the conversation.
