The Russia–Ukraine War and Its Impact on Central Asia | Resilience, Connectivity & Decolonization

In this webinar session, we explore how the Russia–Ukraine war is transforming Central Asia’s geopolitical landscape through the lens of 'The Russia–Ukraine War and Its Implications for Central Asia: Resilience, Connectivity, and Decolonization' (Bloomsbury Publishing, 2024).

Co-editor and contributor Prof. Assylzat Karabayeva (KIMEP University) is joined by contributors Prof. Rustam Atadjanov (KIMEP University) and Prof. Aizada Nuriddenova (SDU University, Kazakhstan). The discussion is enriched by insights from Prof. Angel Saz Carranza (ESADEGeo and ESADE Business School, Universitat Ramon Llull), who offers his expert reflections on the region’s response to the war’s geopolitical and economic ripple effects.

Together, they examine how Central Asian states are navigating new realities of sovereignty, resilience, and foreign policy amid shifting relations with Russia, China, India, and Europe. The conversation sheds light on the region’s efforts toward connectivity, diversification, and decolonization in the post-war context. Watch now!

What You’ll Learn:

✔️ How the Russia–Ukraine war is reshaping Central Asia’s geopolitics

✔️ Why resilience and decolonization are key to regional strategy

✔️ The evolving balance between Russia, China, India, and the EU

Due to internet issues during the live session, we include Prof. Karabayeva’s full response to an audience question: “Regarding the question about whether any other country - such as India - is playing an important role in creating opportunities for Central Asian states. My response is that, since the war in Ukraine, Russia’s influence over Central Asia in both economic and security terms has weakened. Consequently, we have observed a growing interest from India in the region. Although India’s presence cannot yet be compared with that of major actors such as China or the European Union, both state and non-state actors from India have become increasingly active in areas such as tourism, education, and business-to-business cooperation.”
